Recently I’ve come across a camp of ‘purists’ (which is what I think they like to be called – though I think ‘stagnant traditionalist’ better suits their box), in my line of work as an Herbalist & Holistic Health Practitioner. People like this tend to jump on their soapbox and tell others what they should and shouldn’t do based on what they consider ‘cultural appropriation’, the traditional use of a product / herb/ etc., and their own personal biases based on what they have learned in the past. It’s a knowledge-power-asset that they white knuckle, locked in a box, and pretend to own. This sort of mind frame leaves no room for growth and the evolution of resources available to us to expand beyond what we had previously thought to be true. Respecting traditional practices can go hand-in-hand with the evolution, adaptation, and adoptions of those practices. As time marches on, we will always be in need of a new use for ancient practices and resources. And they too will continue to evolve right along with the new needs.
As organic and dynamic beings, we are supposed to evolve and grow. We are innately invited to utilize the information and resources left to us from our ancestors, and other brilliant minds from around the world, and build upon their knowledge with new information and experience to help our world thrive. I can’t say for sure, but as with all the true altruistic Healers that I’ve ever met, they would expect nothing less from the Healers that succeed them. Knowledge is a free, dynamic, living power that will continue to expand and build upon itself despite the limitations of stagnant hoarders slinging around ‘pop-phrases’. We are one world with the same ultimate goal of helping every being thrive in wellness now and for our future generations.
