Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility.”
~ Eleanor Roosevelt
Humans will always be at war with each other as long as we continue to believe that our freedom excludes us from contributing to the compassionate whole. ‘Individualism’, as defined and celebrated in our modern society, is nothing more than a grand misconception… a more flowery spin on the the myth of separateness. Not unlike our freedom from the need to breathe oxygen or to drink water, the freedom from contributing to the ubiquitous love and respect for each other, and all that exists around around us, is merely an illusion. An illusion professed by the weak searching for a purpose more easily grasped and more readily understood.
I remind my 6 children that this responsibility is gift and a power… a power that everyone has but few are aware enough to wield.
When the idea of self-importance was normalized and the existence of the ego was embraced, we completely lost our ability to exist as a peaceful species. And it has never been more evident than it is now. Our differences are not what make us special – it is our mere interactions with another beings, the feeling of the ground beneath our feet, the breeze through our hair, and the warmth from the sun that makes us all special. Being alive. Upon understanding this extremely simple yet buried truth, our responsibility then becomes clear. To love, protect, cherish, and respect every living being. Yet why does this sound like such a foreign concept?
We are taught by society and by many mass religions that we are here to ‘use’ nature, animals, and other humans for the betterment of our own individual status or wellbeing. Rape and pillage the ‘resources’ available to us because they are supposedly provided for our use. This foundational delusion is what will perpetuate this war between species, countries, race, gender, families, and within our own hearts until this truth is understood.
Freedom comes with responsibility. Without acknowledgment and action towards this responsibility, none of us will ever be free.
